Armed Assault Demo Crashing on Windows Vista x64 with D3DX9_30 Not Found Errors

When I tried to actually launch the new Armed Assault demo, it was having none of it.

I tried to search the Armed Assault forums, but let’s put it like this: they’re retarded:

  • You have to sign in to search for anything helpful – a massive barrier to getting useful things done without giving up any personally identifiable information
  • The mods decided that one uberthread for all demo issues was the way to go

I’m sick of registration-required not-properly-Google-indexed but-use-our-shitty-search-it’s-better-than-google websites used for support. The wiki they set up might be a step in the right direction, but people actually need to post useful answers there first.

Even after getting that off my chest, I’m pissed.

Why? The fix was to download DirectX 9 from Microsoft. The December 2006 release of DX9.0c. DirectX version numbering is also retarded.

Say what? I’m using Windows Vista, I have DirectX 10!

Yes. You don’t have the most recent update to DirectX 9 though. Check your WindowsSystem32 directory – you won’t have the file it claims is missing.

So – not from WindowsUpdate (at least, not yet), go download it.

  1. Nowhere does it say that ArmA supports vista, so if you try to make the game run under vista you do so at your own risk.

As for being incapable of searching in one large thread, if you click the print button you see the whole thread in one page, then you can do a ctrl+f search, not exactly difficult now is it? 🙂

    Placebo.

  2. Hey Placebo 🙂

Thanks for teaching me yet-another site-specific trick for learning how to search a long thread in a custom forum implementation.

My complaint is that it’s not exactly Google-style convenience, is it? And Google/Live/Yahoo don’t require me to sign in to search their rather large databases either – that’s just rude. I understand it might be done because the search load on the site would be crippling without it, but surely that’s just another reason to get a major-search-engine-indexable forum together instead of the (nasty words deleted) currently in use. It looks like it was cobbled together in ’98.

I don’t think you’re saying that ArmA won’t support Vista, because I don’t think the commercial reality is that it can be avoided.

I think you misinterpreted my second-half-of-post frustration with Microsoft as frustration with ArmA – the rant about DirectX versions was not directed at BIS. I think during installation it checked the DirectX version but assumed it was late enough to work (can’t remember, and installs of gigabyte files take so long to start on Vista that I can’t be bothered redoing the install for fun).

Once all is said and done, and everyone knows that yes, actually installing DX 9.0c+month even on Vista, my frustration is now with Nvidia, for not releasing a working driver for x64 Vista since mid-October, and it’s now end of December!

ArmA runs slowly enough that I strongly suspect driver issues – hell, if Flashpoint Elite can run faster than this on an Xbox 1, I’m damn sure this can run faster on my GF 6600 GT ! 🙂

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read, and good luck finding better forum software that’ll work better with the Big Three search engines..

  3. I’ll be the first to admit that the version of ikonboard we us is a piece of crap, I’ve been begging and pleading for months for it to be upgraded 🙁
